New Mexico School's ASL Service Corps Program is a service program that serves rural locations in rural New Mexico. Our tutors are hired for one year to provide ASL instructions to families and to school programs where deaf children live.
WHAT OUR PROGRAM LOOKS LIKE
NMSD hires and places ASL Tutors to live in rural locations around the state to provide direct signed language instruction in unexpected places. The service year begins with training in August. Tutors arrive at their site locations by late August to begin teaching ASL.

WHAT DO THE TUTORS DO?

Teaches American Sign Language and Deaf Culture to families in home and educational teams in schools.

Serves as a resource for school, families, and community on American Sign Language and Deaf Culture

Collaborates with the families and school staff to plan applicable and meaningful lessons

Hosts ASL events include ASL Classes, Community events, ASL Day, Mini ASL Immersion and Family to Family Weekend.

Serves as a role model for the Deaf Students

ASL SERVICE CORPS PROGRAM VIDEO

Summary
NMSD is seeking individuals who are native users of ASL, have direct experience with Deaf Culture and have completed a bachelor's degree or associate's degree. Experience teaching ASL would be preferred, but not required. Applicants should have a passion for ASL and those who wish to learn it. This service position requires staff to live in rural locations in New Mexico, so flexibility in living environments is a must. Individuals should have strong communication skills in both ASL and English, organizational skills and a desire to make a difference in the lives of deaf children. Applicants should be able to adapt to new environments and embrace new experiences. This is a service-based program that includes a ten-month commitment and a great deal of regional travel. ASL Service Corps Tutors are required to have their own registered and insured vehicle and will be reimbursed for mileage and approved travel costs.
